Get Set, Get Wet!

Cruising cyclists, weaving roller-bladers and basket-toting picnic goers are a regular sight at East Coast Park. But on 26 October, something very different was going on as a throng of youth from YK Zone descended upon a sprawling field, rousing an otherwise lazy Sunday afternoon with their cheer and chatter. This was “Get Set, Get Wet!” an adrenaline-pumping sports fiesta featuring uncommon games!

Arriving at the battlefield in busloads, members and friends were divided into teams; once the battle lines were drawn, the games began in earnest. To one corner of the field was Dodgeball, the very game made famous by the titular comedy of 2004 while to the other end were the try lines for Touch Rugby.

Claiming the center of the field was the fast paced game of Ultimate Frisbee (Captain’s Ball, frisbee style) as well as the goal posts for a slightly revised game of soccer, literally made to be a gentleman’s sport since only ladies were allowed to score. Last but not least was the perennial favorite — Mattress Sumo Wrestling, where padded wrestlers were to bodily force their opponents out of the sumo ring.

However the day would not be complete without a titanic clash in the final relay where every team was to skip, eat, limbo-rock and hop its way through a series of Herculean tasks and obstacles. Once the earlier games concluded, they mustered their remaining strength and gathered for the ground-shaking showdown.

Finally, it was against the setting sun that the last team crossed the finishing line. Much to the envy of the other sweat soaked teams, the triumphant top three were handed cool Ben & Jerry’s vouchers. As the young people left the field, East Coast Park fell to its evening stillness. All were drenched in perspiration — “Get Set, Get Wet!” indeed — taking with them aching muscles and fond memories.
