Three years ago, when Carol Loi’s older daughter was in Primary 6, Loi organized a mother-daughter tea party as a rite of passage to celebrate her daughter’s transition to teenagehood.

This Mother’s Day, she is organizing a similar session in collaboration with Generations of Virtue, a family-focused ministry group which Loi has been actively involved with for the past decade. GoV teaches on sexual wholeness and integrity, building strong family relationships, and equipping families to transform culture.

The tea party also features Kallos, a young women’s ministry which aims to empower young women as advocates of inner beauty and confidence, boldly living the way God has designed them to. Kallos magazine is its main discipleship platform, teaching and inspiring young women aged 12 to 25 to live out godly values.

Besides Loi and her daughter, Nicole Soh, now 15, who will be sharing as a mother-daughter pair, the afternoon will feature GoV and Kallos speakers, prayers as well as tea-time refreshments.

“I thought of organizing this event because there isn’t one for mothers and daughters, apart from ‘Date with Dad’ which is an event for fathers and daughters,” said Loi, a public officer and mother of two girls, who speaks at churches and schools to equip parents in discussing sexuality, media and technology with their children.

“Families these days are busy,” she noted. “The children are busy with schoolwork, parents are busy with their careers. There is little time to intentionally think about the transition to the teenage years, which is a whole new season in the parenting journey.”

And although sex education has become more prevalent in schools and local communities, many parents are not adequately equipped to discuss sexuality with their children. “Through this event, we hope to provide a safe space to discuss these issues and highlight God’s design for our bodies,” explained Loi.

Ultimately, Loi hopes the session will help strengthen the inter-generational bond between mothers, daughters and grandmothers—or mentors who act in these capacities. “It is important to work together, inter-generationally, so that those who have been there will journey with the younger ones as they discover themselves and God’s call on their lives.”

Tea Party with Mom is on May 14 (Sunday), 4:30pm at 5 Little Monkeys Café, 20 Kallang Ave, Level 11 at $25 per pax (open to mothers and daughters aged 12 to 16). To register, log on to teawithmom.peatix.com. For more information on the participating organizations, visit www.kallos.com.sg and www.generationsofvirtue.org.
