Morning Prayer Meetings Draw Crowds

In line with the church’s focus on prayer, early morning prayer meetings were held for two weeks from 11 August to 22 August 2008. As early as 6.30am, people arrived at three different locations across Singapore to prepare their hearts to seek God. Those living in the West made their way to the church building at Jurong West Street 91, while the East Coasters and those in the central zones chose to go to Heart of God Church at Paya Lebar or Church of Singapore at Marine Parade Road.

Each of the three venue halls were packed to overflowing with City Harvest members coming to pray in their school uniforms and office attire.

As those committed to prayer stood with their hands lifted, the presence of God was tangibly felt by all. Michelle Pay, who attended five sessions, said, “It didn’t feel like an hour at all. Praying together seems easier, more enjoyable and more purposeful.”

Despite having to wake up early to travel down to the prayer venue and after, to make their way back to school or office, most who attended the sessions agreed the prayer sessions were beneficial. “It is a good practice and I’m thinking of incorporating it into my lifestyle, to wake up early and pray everyday,” says attendee Eric Teo.

A pleasant surprise awaited those who attended the early morning prayer meetings. Each day, different breakfast packs were prepared and distributed right after the sessions ended. This was a thoughtful gesture, especially for those who had to rush through morning traffic. Others stayed to fellowship and enjoy their breakfast at designated sections of the prayer venues. An added treat was a $10 Starbucks Coffee voucher for those who attended at least five of 10 prayer sessions.

Without doubt, the early morning prayer meetings were a hit with many of the members — some are already asking when the next meetings will be!
