25 July 2012 – This evening at 9 p.m., Kong Hee’s legal counsel at Allen & Gledhill issued a statement to the Singapore press.
In it, Kong stated that, having “carefully considered” with his lawyers the three charges brought against him by the Prosecution, he maintains his integrity, “and will rigorously defend that integrity against these charges.”
Kong also declared that he trusts Singapore’s judicial system.
“I will explain the facts and circumstances to the Court, and am confident that I will be vindicated.”
The senior pastor expressed his gratitude for the support and encouragement shown him by the church members as well as the Christian community at large.
“Sun and I would like to take this opportunity to thank God for all the people who have blessed us with their love, kindness and prayers during this challenging period of time. We have been tremendously humbled by the support and encouragement from the public, family and friends. We especially thank all those from City Harvest Church and the Christian community at large. They have been a constant source of strength.”
Kong’s statement comes at the end of a day that began with the six accused—Kong, Tan Ye Peng, Chew Eng Han, John Lam, Sharon Tan and Serina Wee—appearing in court.
Kong has not spoken publicly or to the media since investigations into CHC first began in 2010, until now.
As the court proceedings are underway, Kong ended his statement by saying that he “will not make any comment about the charges until the appropriate time and forum.”
