Seldom has the opening of a supermarket been such exciting news, but Cold Storage gives us good reason to cheer for the launch of its revamped outlet at Jelita (Holland Road). “Jelita is our pilot green store. With this implementation, we will constantly evaluate, understand and study the benefits of the green features,” said marketing communications manager Jassie Ling. The green initiatives include:

•    A wider range of green products from Seventh Generation, Ecover, BEE, Envizyme laundry and cleaning products, to bio-home cleaning products to Corn Ware party ware and Go Green stationery. In other words, it makes it easier for the consumer to be a part of the green effort.

•    Sustainable seafood from fisheries in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa and Indonesia, as well as organic vegetables and fruits from the region. Taking the commitment to its sustainable seafood policy one step further, it is the first supermarket chain to initiate a “No shark’s fins” stand at all its Cold Storage and Market Place stores in Singapore.

•    Biodegradable plastic bags at the Jelita outlet by the end of 2011.

•    Environmental-friendly features like energy-saving lighting, freezers, chillers, and refrigerating equipment. The new lighting features cuts energy spending by 71 percent per year.
