Chong’s Yummy Favorites: Espirito Santo

If you’ve got a craving for a good, hearty slab of meat without splashing out at an expensive steak house, the Brazilian-inspired butchery Espirito Santo really satisfies.

Decked in rustic settings, the place exudes an easy-going country charm.

The bread with pesto sauce makes a comforting appetizer to a meaty meal, with the bread arriving soft and warm on your dinner table, and the pesto sauce, light and fragrant, ready and inviting for dipping.

A good starter is their Sausage Platter, which is a tantalizing assortment of various sausages. The Bratwurst in particular, has a deliciously firm, almost bouncy texture to it. The Oxford also comes piquantly flavored; its spicy taste is exquisitely well-balanced. The platter makes an excellent dish for sharing with friends.

The Bahian Spicy Crab Soup is more of a let down, however. One can hardly taste the spiciness in the soup (which is really a mortal sin for spice-loving Singaporeans!). The soup is creamy, but weak and thin in texture: on the whole, an entirely unimpressive concoction.

Espirito Santo’s mains, however, are the restaurant’s saving grace. Its USDA Corn-fed Aped Steak served with Mashed Potatoes and Mixed Vegetable is a hearty slab of quality, succulent beef, massive enough to satisfy the most ravenous meat-lover. We ordered the deliciously tender rib-eye, which was an immensely satisfying experience for its reasonable price.

Another offering on the menu was the Crackling Skin Pork, served with mashed potato, vegetables and brown sauce. The pork was pleasantly tender and juicy, but the “crackling” pork skin lacked the crispy crunch its name suggests, raising suspicions of possible microwaving or even (heaven forbid), re-heating.

The last dish on our list is its Pan Roasted Chicken Breast Stuffed with Anti Pasta & Wrapped with Parma ham. The chicken fillet oozes well-flavoured juices when sliced, and comes paired with a tasty mixed salad that is tossed in the butchery’s unique zesty salad dressing.
