CHRISTMAS 2011: Home For Christmas
Sherlyn Chia lived out every girl’s dream to play the ultimate doll, Barbie. “Which girl wouldn’t like a personal dollhouse and a pool?” she quips.
Singing as the lead female was no problem for Sherlyn but she found acting a challenge. “I had acting classes with (director/trainer) Chris Lee prior to the Christmas rehearsals so I could learn foundational acting skills. We went through character analysis scene by scene so that I could portray Barbie in a way that the audience can relate to. On top of that, we had group and individual dance lessons two to three times every week, and as the Christmas weekend drew closer, there were also late night studio recordings for the backing tracks.”
As the owner of a music school, Chia finds herself having to juggle work, rehearsals and extra personal practices. But being on stage acting, singing and dancing at the same time was much harder. “Plus the bilingual lines!” she exclaims. “Playing the role of Barbie has indeed been a stretch for me, yet it’s been very rewarding.”
