Oct. 21, Thursday would have felt like any other mundane weekday, but not for the 30 guitarists and song leaders from City Harvest Church who were attending a worship workshop conducted by worship leader and guitarist, Teo Poh Heng.

Teo is a well-known figure in CHC and a familiar face on stage at the English services, leading the congregation in song. Twice a year, he conducts Worship Works on weekends—which is a music class for cell group songleaders and cell group guitarists—with the goal to inspire them to pursue greater spirituality as well as technical excellence in their ministry for God.

The three-hour class included a time of worship as well as a session where Teo shared about his personal ministry experience and the importance of engaging the heart in worship. “When the heart is not connected to God during worship, it will slowly drift away,” Teo explained. As such, a believer needs to constantly be mindful of getting the heart involved so that the worship becomes a meaningful experience.

Teo covered the practical aspects for the guitarists such as how to use different strumming patterns and varying the chord structures and voicings for certain songs. For the songleaders, one of the areas Teo emphasized was learning how to sing beautiful melodies during spontaneous worship.

Looking beyond one’s talents, Teo also encouraged the songleaders and guitarists to always give their best when serving God through their music so that lives can be touched and changed. “When we give our best to God and He shows up, that is when we can lead the people into the presence of God,” he exhorted the people.

Alex Poh Wei Thiam, 25, a guitarist, left the session with a renewed mind and was inspired by Teo’s sharing, adding that “there is so much more I can do for God.”

CHC backup vocalist and cell group song leader, Ryan Sean Flores, said, “I am so challenged to work harder and to become more disciplined with the talent that God has given to me. I want to keep improving in order to bring glory to God and to go to the next level in my ministry.”
