Skinny Pizza

Pizza. Not exactly an entry in the dictionary of “healthy foods”.

Here’s good news: Skinny Pizza probably the closest to “healthy” you can get while satisfying your pizza craving. Granted, it’s no competition for a saintly green salad, its crust is so light and thin and … well healthy-tasting, you’d think you were eating a poppadum dressed in pizza toppings. Add to that the generous covering of arugula leaves on every Skinny Pizza, and you’ll be feeling so virtuous because you can let Mom know you haven’t skipped your veggie intake.

But all skinny thinking aside, Skinny Pizza serves up some truly wonderful gourmet pizzas.

Their Wild Truffled Mushroom pizza features chunks of marinated Portobello mushrooms that are practically blooming off the crust. One would think they’re growing these in their backyard, the way they pile it on their pizzas.

The pizza comes covered in good strong aged Parmesan cheese too.

The Salami and Pesto pizza is another divine concoction: Very roasted Italian peppers accompanied with goat cheese and basil leaves make a perfect match. Their other unique creations such as the thick and creamy Parsnip Veloute and the rich Sweet Corn Crab are as delicious as they are original.

One thing not to be missed is their exquisite truffle fries. The fried potato carries the subtle but distinct hint of truffle oil — a touch of class to the humble French fry.

If there is one thing not to order at this otherwise wonderful place, it’s the Curry Chicken Babaganohsh. This Asian twist to the pizza turns out to be an awkward marriage, and the chef’s overly heavy hand with the strong spices does nothing for it.

Dessert would most probably be the ultimate comfort food for some of us. Perhaps it was that chocolate truffle that made it as an anniversary gift, or a slice of blueberry pie which mum baked when you were young. Regardless of the memories they evoke, delicious mouth-watering gourmet desserts are simply irresistible and Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie has the combination of pleasures for the senses!

From the stylish interior to the cozy ambience, and the easygoing service to match along, an enriched dining experience soon ensued. Starting with the triple chocolate cheesecake, consisting of a layer of walnut chocolate fudge cake, another of chocolate chip cheesecake and finally the dark chocolate chantilly, the slice of cake delivers a triple dose of chocolate that was essentially rich, thick and velvety at the same time ¾ sweet indulgence.

Amongst the other creative desserts served at Canelé, the Bon Bon ranked high on my list of favorites. It had a divine crisp chocolate shell and well-balanced brandied flavored cherry in the dark chocolate translated into a light hinge of brandy heat lingering in one’s throat. The Rose Bon Bon, in particular was beautiful and freshly romantic!

Yet another classic dessert worth a recommendation is the Mont Blanc. The chestnut ice cream is filled with creamy goodness, coupled with the buttery base crust, truly satisfying to the soul. A sweet tooth haven certainly.

Crepe Tarte Tartin

Finally, the must-try of them all was the Crepe Tarte Tartin. The amazing blend of sour apple and warm sweet crepe, topped with ice-cold ice cream led to an explosion of taste in your mouth, leaving you desiring for more!

If you ask a romantic like me, what to do after an almost perfect dinner with your lovely date? I would suggest bringing your ladylove to Canelé as it promises to hem up the romantic quotient for the evening with these deliciously charming desserts.
